This was a great place for a group outing. The crabs and shrimp were fresh. We absolutely loved the hushpuppies! And the wings and crab dip were also yummy. Outside of the sliders and mussels, we ate everything and really enjoyed it! If you are looking for an upscale, "nice" restaurant, this isn't the place. But if you are looking for good reasonably priced seafood, this is the place.

Probably should have listened the reviews on here. Slow service and crabs were very light and some had to be sent back for being spoiled. Also, many flies in the restaurant which made the experience pretty miserable. Sticking to Schulz's!

Just the kind of casual, no-frills waterfront atmosphere you want when you plan to dig in to a dozen crabs. It's not on the bay, but on an inlet. Crabs were meaty and reasonably priced. We sat outside on the dock which was perfect for entertaining our kids while we cracked crabs.
(3)Shari L.
Food was expensive and not much offered on plate. Place needs a new look, very old furniture. Nothing special. I wouldn't return unless it had a major revamp.
(2)Susan M.
Really good steamers and clams. Crabs great. Only issue is that you can't order hush puppies at the outside dockside area. But, the waitress suggested that we order them in the restaurant as take out. Worked like a charm, but why couldn't the outside staff just put the order in for us.

Food is OK nothing to write home about. Orange Crush drinks are great. Service ..... Sherry our original all waitress was great, you could tell she was kind of new but she was as helpful as possible. There was another waitress that kept going behind her that WAS NOT our waitress, who was quite nasty and rude...Wendy, who I was told this was her 2nd week working here... This overzealous waitress was rude and very unprofessional. When we ordered out second round (second not first) Wendy marches out right after Sherry and Re-ID's out whole table. Mind you this Wendy woman is NOT out waitress.. I finally asked was she the owner.. Just to find out she's a newer employee that our original waitress Sherry. I'm not sure why she was so aggressive. But I think the establishment would be fine without her.n

I will start with the conclusion. Go somewhere else and don't waste your money here! I dined at this "restaurant" knowing exactly what to expect. A cafeteria dining experience on a small water inlet and hoping for good food. I also knew what I wouldn't get, 5 star service. However, is hoping for 2 star service and food too much to ask for?... What you will get... A cold hostess, Terrible service and overpriced food that taste sub par. I'm a firm believer in the 3 strikes you're out rule. Tried this place three times (tried the MD blue crab, crab cakes and the fish and chips) and won't be back again. Trust me. Save your time, money and dining experience. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!

Walked and the hostess was young and appeared to be no more than 15 years. The vibe was that she didn't want to bother, not happy about her job or maybe having a bad day. She directed us to a table in the back and I immediately noticed the seats had not be cleaned from the last patrons. I then noticed the floor had crabs under and around the table. I went back to hostess and asked her if I could switch to the booth beside her and she rudely turned her head to another employee and after a pause she said "no." I told her the area is dirty and she offered to clean it up. I then gathered my family and left. I don't spend money at restaurants that can't handle the basics of greeting your patrons with a professional and courtesy attitude and offering a clean eating area.

The service we had was slow and inattentive, but I could see they were short staffed, so I won't hold it too much against them. The crabs came quickly and were good, so were the hush puppies. Also ordered steamed mussels in butter, instead of a garlic wine sauce. But they were seriously overlooked. Had them make an Arnold Palmer with sweet tea and pink lemonade, it was tasty.

You would think being so close to the chesapeake the seafood would be at least status quo, but no, sub par at best. Ordered male blue crabs in a mixed size in which all came out small sized, light and at room temperature. Then we said "hey maybe they just aren't that great at blue crabs" proceeded to order a couple pound of snow crabs. The snow crabs were mushy and small also. I'm rating this crab house at 2 stars because they did have food at least. Don't waste your time.
(2)Steven B.
$12 Fish and Chips were among the worst I have seen/ tasted. Wouldn't have them again if you paid me $12. Disappointing for a seafood place.

Hostess staff needs work. Not friendly at all. I took two points off for that. After that our experience was wonderful. Steam pot was delicious. A dozen of crabs medium will run you about $40. Outside seating give you a view of the water. Clean bathrooms. Attached to a mini slot machine casino.
(3)Hunter Z.
Personal favorite. The crab house is decently priced with great food. Having been a regular for more than two years, I figure the crab season is from early April to late October and the best time to go is between June and late October. Why? Because the weather is nice and the crabs meaty. Try the following - I would just order crabs and combo of fries and onion rings. Nothing else.

I was looking for a good place to get fresh Crab while in MD. Came across Abners and it looked perfect. I had the crab Mac and cheese and also Soft shell nuggets. Both dishes were great and exactly what I was looking for. Service was very good. Look forward to returning on our next trip to MD.
(4)David W.
Food was tasty. That's all this place has going for it. We sat outside to eat which is also the same place the casino players step out to smoke. That was a big turn off. The wait staff is either spread too thin or poorly trained. Go for the food, but prepare yourself for poor service, so have lots of patience.
(2)Amanda B.
Wow perfect crab place! It is exactly what you want...fresh crabs, outside seating on the back deck and friendly service. Roxanne was our server and she was great! We'll be back.
(5)John K.
Crabs are usually good, but the atmosphere is similar to eating in a cafeteria. Not the place you feel like relaxing in.
(3)Lee F.
This is a very casual, put-on-a-bib, grab-a-mallet, start-eating-crabs kind of place. Don't forget the beer. Waitress was very helpful, showing us how to peel crabs. Personally, this is more work for my food than I'm willing to pay for.
(3)Andrea D.
Guaranteed to leave disappointed... The best part of the meal were the saltines. Ordered chicken fingers and they were still frozen in the middle. Nice! The size of the crabs were suspicious, very small and light. For us to be seated right away on a Saturday night at 7:00 should have clued us in that it wasn't going to be good, but nevertheless, we know now.
(1)Gerb B.
Very disappointed with the over all dining experience at this restaurant. The food was was of poor quality, the service was non existent and the prices were inflated. Save your buck and go elsewhere!
(1)Brian W.
Worst place ever,,service was horrible food all over the floors and the crabs didn't look legal size. I would never step foot in that place again
(1)Elizabeth W.
OK, I will admit, going to a crab house with 12 other people on a Saturday is not the best idea if you want great service. However, I do expect at 4:30pm in the afternoon that we should be able to get some moderately good service...right? meh....not really. The waitress was slow, we didn't get to order until 5:30pm because first they had to find a place for us to sit when the whole place was nearly empty, we had to wait 20 minutes for 2 pitchers of water, and another 20 minutes after asking her what the price of a dozen crabs was because $30 a dozen is kinda steep for us. When a customer says we need a minute...this does not mean come back a LOT later. While I'm on the subject, every time we asked for something, it took the waitress at least 15 minutes to get back to us and we didn't leave the restaurant until almost 8pm because of the slow service. Luckily we were outside and it was great weather or else someone probably would have complained. Onto the food. The only reason this place gets 3 stars is because the crabs and seafood pots were spot on. I got the deluxe seafood pot ($29.95) which included dungeness crab, 1 MD blue crab, 1 cluster of king crab legs, 6 shrimp, mussels and clams and a corn on the cob. Overall, not a bad buy. The standard seafood pot was $24.95 and it didn't include the dungeness crab. The Fish and chips ($10.95) that my sister ordered was apparently dry and under seasoned but she liked the fries. I do want to mention that the fish and chips was TINY!!!! She was still starving after she finished the food but wasn't willing to spend any more money to get more food. The Crab Cake looked more like a chicken patty and my friend who ordered said it wasn't good and it certainly didn't make her like seafood much. I did like the atmosphere and I did like the server because she was nice, but when I asked the group what they would rate the restaurant, everyone said it was a 2.5-3.5 out of 5 stars. So clearly the experience was not a good one for them either. Also, I think almost all of us left still hungry. Not really a good thing when leaving a restaurant that you just spent 3+ hours at right?

Love Abners! I have been going for years with my family. I visited Abners this past Sunday with my sister and had a fabulous meal! We ate hush puppies, french fries, 2 salads, 2 drinks, 2 mixed drinks, and a dozen crabs for $66! The food is always amazing! Also the drive from Arlington/McLean is not bad at all it took us exactly an hour even with the detours from road construction.

Abner's is no longer the decent seafood restaurant it once was several years ago. Against my better judgment I ate there yesterday (at the insistence of friends) despite a really bad experience a few years ago. At that time, Abners management promised to refund payment for the crappy food I purchased for a party of four, but did not make good on its promise. I subsequently filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and Abners did not acknowlege or respond to the complaint. Yesterday, the "crab cakes" we ordered were like no other Maryland crabcake I have ever had. They were burned on the outside. They consisted of mostly mushy filler, with bits of something that looked like backfin (not lump) crabmeat, or maybe even some type of fish. They had a strong metallic taste, an old taste if you will. The fact that we became ill (as in food-poisoning ill) after eating just a few bites of them tells me that the contents were not fresh/were not prepared fresh. The fries were dark in color, heavy and limp with grease, unseasoned, cold, just not fit for consumption. The cole slaw was warm and there was milky white liquid at the bottom of its container. How disgusting! It was obviously not fresh and therefore inedible. Abner's obviously does not care...they totally ignored me and the BBB last time around. Maybe prospective customers will. Yes, the wait staff and service also suck.

Ugh $18 crabcake sandwhich was mediocre at best. What a disappointment. Cafeteria style seating and aesthetics are lacking. Don't go here.

The good: 1. All you can eat crab for 25 bucks/person on Wednesdays and Sundays. Other days? 30 bucks I think. No clue how they choose those two days to have the discounted price. Talk about random. 2. Pitcher of crap beer: 9 bucks. Individual glass is 2-2.50. 3. The crab is GOOD. Super salty seasoning but great flavor. Highly recommend it. 4. Very chill vibe. Plain decor, basic tables. The bad: nothing really. Basically this place is a great place to pig out on crab and have beer. Not amazing but above average. Definitely recommend.

Food is pretty good - my party enjoyed lots of different seafood - especially the steamed crabs, Abner's specialty. Service is friendly, but sloooow. I've been coming here for years. The crabs have generally been pretty good, however last night was my first visit in three years after a particularly poor experience in 2011. The game room (slot machines) has grown substantially. You now have to walk through the game room to get to the dining area, which is smaller than it used to be. Fortunately gamblers can no longer smoke in the game room, nor do you hear the slot machines like you used to prior to their remodel.

As a visiting former Marylander, I wanted to eat crabs during my vacation. We spent the day at the water park just around the corner - three adults and three kids -- and asked one of the staff where to go. She suggested Abner's so we tried it. It's been a long time since I've been to a crab house so I didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by this low key, no frills place. We were seated quickly -- arriving at 5pm probably helped -- at a large table already set up with brown paper, condiments and napkin holder. Our very young waitress (15 maybe??) was friendly and answered questions about the menu. We ordered a dozen large crabs, scallops, a basket of hush puppies, a burger (for the one non-seafood eater) and a side salad with three different dressings "on the side" to share. The food came quickly and was well prepared. The hamburger was large and well-seasoned and came with a very generous portion of crispy fries. The scallops were broiled perfectly and served with a side of garlic butter for dipping. Hush puppies were plentiful but a little weird -- very small and on the sweet side and served with honey in little plastic cups. We thought they tasted a bit like donuts. The salad was a pretty standard iceberg with carrot and cabbage shreds but it had three huge chunks of a beautiful fresh tomato that tasted as good as it looked. The dressing was in big individual plastic cups - blue cheese, thousand island and ranch -- all good but served straight from the fridge cold and thick. And then the crabs came out. A dozen beauties on a cafeteria tray. They were great. Hot, not too wet and tasty. We ate 11 of them and asked for a box for the last one because we didn't want to leave it! On the way out, we played the slot machines and won $5. Overall a really nice experience with just a few easily overlooked things -- not enough silverware for the table, very small styrofoam plates for sharing the salad, easily torn recycled brown paper napkins rather than a roll of paper towels, blaring TV, dining hall decor. These slight negatives were far outweighed by the service and convenience -- Shaylin put our ice pack in the freezer and retrieved it for us and also offered to get ice cream when the truck showed up at the front of the restaurant because she was getting some anyway. Really sweet girl and did her job well. There is also a large vanity to wash hands outside the bathrooms and plentiful parking. I would go back.

Was kind of let down. Small hardshells so we ordered Snow crab legs and they were over cooked. The best thing I ate was the softshell crab sandwich. Wasm't great but good.

I thought that a local restaurant would take pride in their food and service, especially since this place has been open for half a century. Nope. Not this place. The server/hostess was slow and unorganized. She got one of our meals completely wrong. We ordered an appetizer that was $15. We received it on a plate that was too small, and the silverware was plastic. Yes. Plastic. It had 3 small fried oysters, that were literally laying in a pool of grease, 3 crab balls that were good, and 3 small steamed shrimp. When she placed it on the table, the tarter and cocktail sauce were laying on top of the food with the silverware. She gave us no plates, or any utensils other than those. The table had food on it when we sat down. It was freezing cold in the restaurant. (Yes it was November, but modern man created devices to produce heat for a reason). The service was incredibly slow. The food was less than mediocre. I would never suggest them to anyone, nor would I ever return.

So here we are on a Sunday evening and this was our first time eating at this crab shack. It is located across the street from a mini up & coming townhouse complex and also on the water. They have inside and outside dining. Once inside, it was about a 30 minute wait. As I took in the appearance on the inside, it was dirty and resembled a soup kitchen I once volunteered for. However, the voices in my head suggested this was "character"... similar to a Texas Roadhouse where we're allowed to throw peanut shells on the floor--we know it's unsanitary, but we just accept it. Also, Instead of wiping the tables, they cut sheets of brown paper--again "character". So I won't hold the dirty floors and counters against them, we'll just assume it's done on purpose. Our server's name was Jenna and she was very nice, courteous and even listened to our four year old daughter as she promptly ordered shrimp (the only seafood she could think of). We also ordered the cream of crab soup, dozen crab and oyster sandwich. Our order came out in good time and was accurate. The food was excellent. The soup was very tastey but I felt it was slightly grainy vs creamy. The oyster sandwich was really just fried oysters crammed into a bun... not the most creative rendition but my wife ate it just the same. The crab was steamed and seasoned perfectly and the popcorn shrimp was average. Overall, food was very well prepared, nothing extremely great, but very good. The server got tied up towards the middle of service though, perhaps she was helping out a new co-worker, or providing mentorship to her team but after 20 of eating and 17 mins additional mins of waiting for the check , I chased her down with my credit card in hand and managed to force them to accept my money anyway. From a prior server; here's your tip: if your customer is holding his credit card and waiting for you, deliver his check ASAP as tipping wages begin to diminish as sit, staring at our own food scraps.

My best advice is for people to avoid this place as best possible!!! Service is horrible and the place is definitely not worth the cost. They placed customers out of turn, the hostess Manager was extremely unprofessional and rude. We left without even eating our meal. The crab selection is small and you can get better crabs at the DC Wharf or on the side of the road in PG County. If I could give a negative rating, I would...

We had dinner at Abner's Crabhouse at 20:00 on Sunday night. We are from out of town, a good 14 hour drive. The restaurant was recommended by local friends. The place was only 1/4 full, not too busy. We each ordered the deluxe seafood package for $30. The food arrived not too long after we ordered. The seafood was hot and fully immersed in melted butter. The local crabs and snow crabs were over cooked, a bit dry. There were 6 clams and about 7 mussels at the bottom of the platter. 3 of the clams did not open so there was no way I was going to eat them. 1 of the mussels did not open and 2 of the mussels had smashed broken shells that exposed the mussel, not a good ideal to eat those either. Overall a very disappointing experience. We had expected a tasty meal considering the crabs were local. We were totally disappointed with our meal.

I'm a big fan of informal dining, especially when it's the summer, I'm near the water, and I'm eating seafood. I'm not a fan of disorganized, record-setting painfully slow service. I'm OK with $22-28 entrees. I'm not so OK with $22-28 entrees when they're served on a table covered in brown paper by summer staff wearing t-shirts and shorts who don't know the market price of fish listed on their menu and can't tell you if the flounder is locally caught. Which brings me to my review of Abner's. Their seafood is average. The broiled crab cake sandwich was mostly stuffing with very rare actual crab chunks served on a generic hamburger roll. Definitely overpriced at $13. A flounder sandwich ($11), also served on a hamburger roll, was average. Although the stuffed rockfish ($22) was good, it was extremely hot, as if recently microwaved. The corn on the cob side was cold. Average tasting, overpriced seafood (a 2-3 star rating) was the only "positive" of our visit. There are two glaring problems. #1)Abner's needs a different cleaning crew. Soon. The floor surrounding our table looked like it was last cleaned in May. That is May 2010. I enjoy casual dining, but I'm not a fan of dirty dining. #2)Abner's needs a more efficient and/or larger kitchen staff. We waited 1 hour 30 minutes for the crab cake sandwich. The flounder sandwich was delivered 1 hour and 40 minutes after we were seated. The stuffed rock was delivered at 1 hour and 50 minutes. I hate it when people in the same party are served at such different times. Total time spent to receive 3 sandwiches and one hot/cold entree: 1 hour 50 minutes. Every time we asked our waitress when our meal would arrive she told us, "Four minutes", then rushed away. Ugh. I realize that Chesapeake Beach is a tourist area. I understand that many of Abner's customer's will visit only once. Nonetheless, not everyone is a tourist. Some of us would return to a funky crab shack on the water if we received service and food compatible with what we paid. Until that happens, I will remain one of Abner's many one-time customers.

Decent - nothing to get too excited about - but good solid food for a decent price. No fuss - pretty greesy - good place to go when you want to dress down and eat something fried. Think of it as high end hang over food.
(3)David M.
Funny place. We went here with the inlaws after a trip to the bay. It was good. Don't go in your Sunday best, though. Especially if you plan on ordering a nice pile of crab!!!!! Walking in I passed multiple tables piled high with crab and entire families just grabbing, smashing, and eating. At that point, I'd already decided what I wanted to eat. AHHH but my inlaws and wife didn't want crab. FINE. We're only at a crab shack, guys. So I asked our very, very friendly waitress what I could do about this, and she said they offer smaller piles. So of course, I ordered a small pile (13) of very tasty crabs. It was a chore, but I made it through! The place also has a bunch of real slot machines, so if you're a freak for gambling AND crab, go for it. The hush puppies are quite tasty, as well. But be careful cos they are easy to fill up on. Overall I enjoyed it, and if I am back out that way I'd definitely swing by again.

"Bobby's Back". Did a day trip today from DC. What can I say, Crab, Hushpuppies and Cold Beer....Food was great, service was over the top. Thanks Brittany!

We stopped at Abner's for lunch on Memorial Day. It seemed like maybe it would fit us - informal. Great for four adults and an infant. We all had crab in one version or another. Half dozen steamed crabs. They were served with a bucket, two mallets, and plenty of napkins. They were great. The crab cakes broiled or fried (we tried 'em both ways) were absolutely as good as I have ever had. The crab salad, too, was just loaded with fresh crab. The shrimp poppers on the kids' menu also were very, very good. The service was friendly and prompt. All in all, I would recommend Abner's without hesitation. If you looking to dress up and have a formal dinner, it probably isn't what you are looking for. But the food was outstanding.
